No one likes it when a game doesn’t do well but these games sadly make the biggest video game flops of 2013 list. 2013 was such a huge year for gaming in larger ways than usual with the release of Xbox One and PS4 that some games glided right under the radar making. Some anticipated games that slipped from development rose from their grave and snuck out for release where some hugely popular games didn’t crush the sales charts like expected. Rather it is a large game that nearly destroyed a fan favorite series or a game that simply went unnoticed due to lack in proper marketing, 2013 actually held quite a few flops in terms of game releases. With the buzz focusing on new consoles games were a little bit thrown and for that we have created a list of the biggest flops of 2013.
Biggest Video Game Flops of 2013 #5: Gears of War: Judgment
If you don’t count sells, Gears of War: Judgment was a flop that could have nearly been said to destroy the Gears of War series. This game was a prequel to the first game in the Gears of War series and it did the franchise no justice. Gears of War had been one of Microsoft’s exclusive frontrunner for years and for good reason but this game feel way short of the name the series built itself up to. The story was semi dull the multiplayer wasn’t as hooking as games past and it didn’t become the game that every 360 owner had. It was just a game created that seemed to be out for milking a series for more money rather than creating a new experience for gamers and we think that showed which is why Gears of War: Judgment didn’t end up being the impressive display fans had hoped for. Hopefully Microsoft kicks the series up a notch with Black Tusk taking over development and Rod Ferguson overseeing the series again as Gears of War: Judgment almost single-handedly destroyed all love felt by super fans of the series.
Biggest Video Game Flops of 2013 #4: Tomb Raider
Although it can be disputed that Tomb Raider wasn’t one of the biggest video game flops of 2013 at all, Squire Enix sells compared to advertising might beg to differ. It had previously been announced that both Hitman Absolution (a 2012 release) and Tomb Raider (2013 release) both made far less money than were expected, placing Tomb Raider on our biggest video game flops list. In recent months the game has gained a bit more attention with its re-release which would take this sorrowful information on a turn but in the mean time; although widely popular and praised by a specific audience, Tomb Raider 2013 could have done a bit better than it did. The problem came into play when a change in character took hold. Immediately catching attention and media buzz with Lara Croft’s new look actually split Tomb Raiders audience; those in favor of old Lara and those who enjoyed the new Croft. It appears the Square Enix is focused on trying to squeeze more sales out of Tomb Raider in 2014 but sadly as packed full of adventure the game is it falls just short of definite success.
Biggest Video Game Flops #3: Remember Me
Remember Me may not have been a bad game at all, it was actually very interesting and gripping, but players didn’t quite seem to ‘remember it’. Being a game that released during the summer months you would think that it would be a title popular to tide people over the known summer doubt of games. Unfortunately this game actually didn’t catch a whole lot of attention. This game had a whole lot of potential to be something great but there were just drawbacks that held players from it so here is appears as one of the biggest video game flops of the year. Simply put, players didn’t know what it was. They just weren’t gripped with advertisements, trailer and screenshots like a lot of other games out there. Remember Me just kind of existed. The worse part about this game being a flop is that there was nothing wrong with it. It was just a game in an ocean with 500 worth great games swimming in it and that’s what made this title overlooked by a lot of players.
Biggest Video Game Flops #2: Call of Duty: Ghosts
Okay first of all it should be none by the entire world that Call of Duty is no flop. Call of Duty: Ghosts even sold more than what was expected but this game cracks our list for a very different reason than the typical meaning of the word “flop”. Call of Duty: Ghosts was one of the first games in the series for a very long time that a mass majority of players could say sucked for many reasons. It was exactly what was expected from a Call of Duty and it disappointed a lot of dedicated fans. From a lack in interest in single player story to a diminishing multiplayer this game didn’t hold up like past Call of Duty games have. Call of Duty: Ghosts is a wakeup call for the franchise because if Call of Duty continues down this path games will actually begin to flop in sales until the games dig their own grave much like the Tony Hawk and Guitar Hero series. Call of Duty: Ghosts is a clear mark of a downwards turn for Call of Duty which means we consider Call of Duty: Ghosts one of the biggest flops of not only 2013 but of the entire Call of Duty lifespan.
Biggest Video Game Flops 1: Ride to Hell Retribution
Ride to Hell: Retribution; a game so many waited for turns out to be a game so few knew actually released. Ride to Hell was in development then canceled which proved to be a devastation for some players. It looked unique and original why stop its development? Years after the announcement that Ride to Hell dropped out of development, it was picked back up. When the announcement that the game was back in development it caught far less attention than its original announcement and apparently reached fewer people than what was dreamed of. Ride to Hell: Retribution was announced to be back in the slate of release and just a few months after its announcement of its return came its release date. The date came and went and with it another on of the biggest video game flops. Very few gamers played the game and very few players actually knew it came back from its own death. Needless to say Ride to Hell: Retribution is the definition of ‘ biggest video game flops ‘ and is the number one biggest video game flops of 2013 list.
