(This article contains spoilers for the Saints Row series particularly Saints Row IV; please read with caution)
The release of Saints Row IV has come and gone with great controversy and concern for what Volition and Deep Sliver will do next for the series. It is no secret that fans of Saints Row 1 and 2 had hated what the development team did with The Third as well as the fact that they were highly dissatisfied with the advertisements for Saints Row IV. Now that Saints Row IV is available it has been learned that Saints Row IV may not have been as bad as fans expected but instead opened the door for new hope on what is to come for the series next.
First things first, it was known that the development team has announced that this is the end of Saints Row as we know it. This statement had been announced before the release of Saints Row IV and was a breath of fresh air to some. Others took it upon themselves to think that Saints Row ended at the end of Saints Row IV however some have come up with a theory of the series continuing. In Saints Row IV there is a mission that leaks rumors about Saints Row moving on to a new game in the series which is slated for a 2015 release. Whether you want to take the official statement about Saints Row IV being the end of Saints Row or the end of Saints Row “as we know it” is up to you. The peculiarity of the numbers placed within the Saints Row IV mission giving away a 2015 next-gen release is a little to oddly placed for us to believe that Saints Row is truly over.
Anyway, assuming there will be another Saints Row, a Saints Row V; what is it that we should be expecting to see in the game. If there is one thing Saints Row IV proved to us fans is that Volition realized they made a mistake with Saints Row: The Third so in four they brought back old characters and opened the door for two opportunities for future Saints Row games. The first opportunity is leaving our favorite gangster heroes floating around in space to explore new life and planets, taking over each one. The second option is favored and that is time travel.
If the former gangster are left in space, that opens the door for Volition to explore new worlds and planets; making them each cornier than the next. This will not appeal to their old fan base witch their clearly catered to in Saints Row IV so the thought of this being the rout they take seems very unlikely.
Under the assumption that Volition will listen to their fan base they will take the game back in time and re-write Saints Row: The Third the way their original fans would have only dreamed of. Of course this options leaves happy tears in the eyes of all fans because that means the development team would be able to create a true sequel to their nearly perfect game Saints Row 2. We would only hope that traveling back in time that the Third Street Saints would choose to go back to the moment they destroyed Ultor as well as undergoing memory loss from all events that took place after that while maintaining a defeat of Zinyak.
It’s farfetched, especially because we could see Gat fighting for going farther back to save Aisha but it’s still possible, plausible and for the fans. We see hope that Saints Row can be restored to be the way original fans have wanted it to go. Imagine Shaundi never changed; Gat never ‘died’ and the boss never softened up and became a sellout. Presidency wouldn’t be a goal and we would all live happily ever after with a Band-Aid infested flea ridden Freckle Bitches Fist.
Of course, there is always the possibility of Volition forgetting Saints Row: The Third ever happened as well as IV and going back in time to follow another young thug and his pursuit to become king while not making the mistakes they made with the Saints Row series. They left a lot of strings untied and those answers can be given to the player with a new character as the protagonist. While as we are still in speculation if Saints Row V will ever even exist, all these thoughts are far from confirmation. As of now they are considered hope, dry hope at that.
What would you like to see from the Saints Row series assuming that a Saints Row V will be on its way for next-gen consoles? Should Volition put the Third Street Saints to rest and follow someone new with new life challenges, should they let us go back in time and rewrite the horrid way of Saints Row: The Third or should our friends start traveling that galaxy.
