Something amazing happened today; EarthBound finally found its way onto the Wii U’s virtual console. The game is available in Europe for £6.99 and in North America for $9.99. EarthBound, of course, was released in Japan earlier this year.
EarthBound, known as Mother 2 in Japan, originally launched on the SNES back in 1995. The title was well-received in Japan, but did poorly in North America. Due to its poor reception, EarthBound is the only title in the Mother series to be released in the United States. Though there are rumors that the entire series will one day be translated and released as a collection on the 3DS; Nintendo has neither confirmed nor denied these rumors.
This is the first digital release of the game in North America. Rumors of the game coming to the Wii’s virtual console proved to be false. Those who download the title will receive a digital copy of the strategy guide available during the game’s initial launch. The guide is a great addition for players who missed out on this great cult classic back in the 90′s. Perhaps a new generation of gamers will come to appreciate EarthBound’s quirks. And, who knows, maybe the sales will be good enough to inspire Nintendo to release the rest of the series in North America. One can only hope.
