In his album Chrono Jigga, artist 2 Mello remixes the music of Jay-Z and the soundtrack of the classic RPG game Chrono Trigger to create ten original mashups. While this may come as a surprise to some Jay-Z fans, the combination isn’t entirely outside of his repertoire. As featured in the opening track, the rapper once said: “I was really a gamer…it was my thing.”
Just by skimming the titles of these tracks, one can easily see the influence of both the game and the rapper, such as Masamune Problems and An Encore in Time. The manner in which 2 Mello uses the songs from the game puts an interesting touch on the mood and feel of the Jay-Z tracks, and vice versa.
On the whole, the album meshes well. Most of the elements work together smoothly, including a few sound effects from the game. In fact, you may be surprised at how much some of the Chrono Trigger soundtrack complements the lyrics and music of Jay-Z’s songs. A few of the game’s themes could believably act as the original backgrounds to current rap tracks, such as in 2 Mello’s Dirt in the Palace.
However, at a few points, the songs seem to fight each other a bit. To be fair, this may be due to my familiarity with Chrono Trigger. After hearing the soundtrack for hours of gameplay, it’s easy to automatically hone in on those portions of the songs – purely out of reflex.
