When speaking to the average PlayStation 3 fan about which game is the best PS3 exclusive the answers are astonishing. Nearly every player asked answered Uncharted; Uncharted 2 to be specific. When asking these players why they had such strong feelings toward the series the most common answer tended to be something like, “Because there is no other game out there like it.” As we know the game is great and does have original points, it is not understood how a fan could answer that there is no other game on the market like the Uncharted series.
During this same ‘Q&A’ sessions with fans the franchise Tomb Raider was brought up (of series past, not the upcoming 2013 release) and most every fan denied the two games even being remotely similar. These titles could be the most comparable games on the market yet players are failing to realize that both games follow a similar pattern.
The Tomb Raider series quickly became a classic. It is an older series, especially compared to Uncharted and one of the first great action adventure games and it captured a significant fan base. The game featured great story but more importantly fantastic puzzles. Tomb Raider was something that so many people loved so why do Uncharted fans get so angry about comparing to great titles.
The Uncharted series is a game the quickly took on a huge amount of fans as well. This is a game that did not fall in the trend of shooters but stepped outside the box by making something based on story and puzzle which has been noticed as uncommon in the video game industry. Instead the game took some inspiration from Tomb Raider, or so it seems, and put it to use with new story telling ideas and new game play elements.
It cannot be said that the games are exactly the same; they defiantly are not. But they are both too great games that can easily be compared to one another. We are a fan of both games and appreciate the creativity in both games but cannot understand why fans refuse to agree that they are games that are semi-similar. Uncharted is a cover-based cinematic and very linear shooter with a puzzle between stages. Uncharted series shares more similarities with Gears of War, Crash Bandicoot and Indiana Jones than with Tomb Raider. The games are so different in presentation, gameplay and story that saying that you like one doesn’t mean that you will like the other.
Tomb Raider has more exploration, the platforming is more acrobatic like Mario, is not cinematic, less action oriented, less linear and more boring too. It doesn’t has a cover mechanic, the story is not charming, doesn’t have many recurring second characters… Only someone that hasn’t played both can say that they are similar. Tomb Raider has never been story-driven either and its reboot looks like is taking lots of cues from Uncharted.
anyone that knows anything about games knows that Uncharted took from Tomb Raider and indiana jones… OBVIOUSLY. Most real gamers know this. Who said uncharted fans (like myself) don’t know or deny that Uncharted took some things from tomb raider.. and gears of war, and indiana jones… etc…
That’s not to say that Uncharted / Naughty dog stole everything, they are obviously very original and amazing with their work. Every game dev “steals” from others… look at how many games have cover systems now like gears of war…. look at what just came out…. Resident Evil 6….. which has a $HITTY cover system lol which obviously TRIED to imitate gears of war.
Anyway… I can’t wait for Tomb Raider to return. Long-time fan, hope they go back to the crazy / amazing jumps and puzzles that they used to have.
