Why Ouya is GOOD and BAD for the Industry… as well as your free to play Wallet

Ouya may have collected over 8 million dollars on Kickstarter however that doesn’t mean it will be a success.  Don’t you remember Peter Molynuex?  Why the hell is he famous anyways?  All he did was make promises to the gaming industry that well, seemed to have been done before.  Kind of like when a crack head asks for money and promises he will pay you back, just don’t expect to see him for another 3 years until he needs another “favor”… Ok Peter I will buy your next game… Ugh trolled again with crap!  It doesn’t help that the movie industry has seen it’s share of big budget flops.  The NASA Rover Curiosity could have sold more movie tickets to martians than John Carter did to humans.  Sorry Disney if you wanted James Cameron to make an Avatar sequel just ask him.  So is Ouya trying to deliver on empty promises while shoving as much cash as they can in their pockets?

Ouya: The Bad

If I throw this controller… will it come back to me?
If I throw this controller… will it come back to me?

With all this hype around Ouya you have to be weary of the new console.  Let’s face you get what you pay for, and for $99 this console has me climbing a cliff with no harness.  Ouya is stating that for under 100 dollars you will be getting a next-gen console.  HA!  Yea well that is hardly the case in my opinion.  The idea is great everyone has a dev. kit that is basically what Ouya’s selling point is. In turn allows anyone that owns the console the ability to make games.  Yet gamers want one thing, games.  The Indie part of the gaming industry has become more of a Sundance film festival of the industry as of late.  Which is a really great thing with games like Minecraft, Counter Strike, even games like Braid which all had roots with small developers and fans of the game which helped us spend hours on end.  In gaming worlds we would not have seen in the industry if not for their time and effort.

Yet consoles already have a platform for small developers.  Yea it is more sophisticated than Androids platform and well takes some excruciating patience as far as getting a game certified is concerned.  Yet the market is ready for over 20 Million people through Xbox 360 ALONE!  That doesn’t count the Wii, 3DS, or PS3 aspect of marketing indie games.  Don’t expect a high-end quality product either with each console coming in at under 100 dollars you are not getting an iPAD with all the bells and whistles.  You are getting some kind of China trinket that belongs in the swap meet.  With a lot of fans drooling with anticipation they may be better off waiting for the next Galaxy tablet from Samsung to come out.

Zynga... a dying breed.
Zynga… a dying breed.

Yep go check your crops… oh wait you don’t do that anymore?  With a huge cult following with word of mouth and Facebook, Zynga literally blow up over night.  And the same goes for the companies plummet to the ground.  With social media games being the huge draw factor of the company Zynga  had millions if not billions of people in the palm of their hands.  Yet even after a softball pitch this company has still completely ruined what they revolutionized.  With games that are clearly rip off other games.  It doesn’t help that Bankruptcy looms over the once mighty giants head.  At least Micheal Vick didn’t have the company fight against another company… oh wait… EA games.  It just goes to show that Ouya will be in the same boat if small time developers choose to infringe on copyrights much like Zynga did.

This would be horrible news for Ouya with a huge mess like this the console’s parents would be very upset about it!  It is a good thing that it wasn’t released before Zynga’s downfall or they might be included in this debacle for helping to distribute the games in their library. This also shows that you will not be BUYING a game, you will be DOWNLOADING a title so don’t expect to go to Gamestop or eBay to at least get some cash back for your gaming pleasantries.  Mind you that you will not be able to unlock everything in the game unless you pay for every piece of armor there is.  This also begs the fact that why would gaming developers be interested in developing for a console that well, one has a huge battle to fight against the big guns (Nintendo, Microsoft, Sony) and two could be ROOTED to allow hackers to NEVER PAY FOR A THING!

Ouya: The Good

Ouya's dashboard seems awfully familiar...
Ouya’s dashboard seems awfully familiar…

Sadly Ouya is already a glass half empty.  Yet that doesn’t mean that the glass isn’t half full either.  With the ability to reach consumers at a level that is unmatched at a price that Wal-Mart would be happy to put on store shelves with a rollback  price. With a small cult following which includes Square-Enix, Twitch TV, OnLive (thats still around?), and other streaming media applications soon to jump on board. Ouya definitely has some good things going for it.  The best thing however will be its ability to reach consumers who could one day potentially become the next big thing in gaming industry.

Owners of the little cube will be able to mod their console with upgrades that is reminiscent of a PC.  Just don’t expect this console to go toe to toe with a Giant like Nintendo which releases the Wii-U later this year.  For one thing you don’t see anyone complaining about how the Ouya’s graphics are the equivalent to Gamecube… ouch.  Another thing to take note of is that the operating system it runs on will see upgrades as the Android system progresses.

Ouya has a lot of promises that well may or may not be delivered, kind of like all those Grand Theft Auto V articles you read about that states a holiday release.  We just have to wait and see if this console is for real, or if it is just another gimmick.  Hopefully this doesn’t end up like Atari’s Jaguar or Sega’s Dreamcast, since that is the only fan base in terms of numbers that the Ouya seems to  be gathering.  Yea it has over 8 million dollars raised but it’s Facebook page only has 20k likes.
