Update: This article was written and published before the official
announcement of Call of Duty: Black Ops II. It has now been confirmed that Call
of Duty: Black Ops II will take place in a near future setting.
As players probably know by now the rumor of Activision releasing yet another Call of Duty title this November is pretty much set in stone. With the rumor of Black Ops 2 said to be announced during an NBA playoff game on Tuesday May 1st speculation on what the game will actually focus on has arose. There has been a large rumor that the next installment to the Call of Duty franchise will take place in the future rather than the Cold War era. As military first-person shooters are getting a bit dry and overdone maybe Activision is following in the lines of Ghost Recon: Future Soldier and taking the success of Black Ops to a more futuristic setting. The speculations are on the rise and soon enough, come Tuesday, all the rumors on where and when the next Call of Duty game will take place will soon be uncovered however do players think a futuristic setting would be the best for the Black Ops series of the Call of Duty franchise?
It is believed that this rumor is completely bogus; why you ask? When a new game especially one as big as Call of Duty is released a lot of rumors are created just for the heck of seeing how long they will last. That doesn’t however mean that the rumor is one hundred percent not true. What is known is that Activision not only bought out all of the internet domain names for Call of Duty: Black Ops from 2-6 but it is also known that the game company purchased domain names that revolved around futuristic warfare; which has no relation to the Black Ops series. If Activision was planning on making a futuristic game it would be more likely that it would be a separate series all together rather than taking what they made with Black Ops and completely changing the course of the game. It would make more sense that as the way Modern Warfare 3 ended, the Call of Duty game after Black Ops 2 would take a turn for the future before Treyarch’s hit.
No matter which rumor a player hears before an actual announcement, trailer, or reliable screenshot is released for the game; no one will know exactly where Activision wants to take the series. If you are a player who is actually excited for the futuristic rumor why not check out Ghost Recon: Future Soldier? That is a confirmed military third-person shooter set in the future which could easily clench your futuristic warfare thirst. Back to Black Ops 2, it wouldn’t be understood why Activision would take the Black Ops series in that direction while they are sitting on a solid base with characters as well as one of the only games that takes place in that time during the Cold War. Activision has a Modern Warfare series that touches base with a near future time period which make us highly doubt this rumor focusing on Black Ops 2. Although any true details are yet to be confirmed, players will know more information or at least be able to put two and two together in order to find out more information once the true announcement trailer is played during the half time show of the NBA playoff game on May 1st.
